4 killed in violence:Daily Sun

 At least four people were killed and over 100 others wounded in street fighting across the country on Monday as Awami League and BNP observed January 5 as the ‘victory day for democracy’ and ‘democracy killing day’ respectively. Activists of the BNP-led 20-party alliance went berserk, got locked in clashes with police and Awami League activists, torched and vandalised scores of vehicles in the ca
pital and elsewhere since morning. Announcement of a tougher movement by the BNP-led coalition and counter movement by AL virtually cut the capital off other parts of the country. Clashes occurred as activists of both the parties remained on streets. Natore: Two people—Raihan Ali Rana and Rakib Hossain—were shot dead and 22 others injured in a clash between AL and BNP in Sadar upazila here at 10:30am. Aminul Haq, district BNP secretary, claimed the deceased to be their activists. The clash erupted when two groups brought out processions. Both the groups, equipped with firearms, fired bullets targeting each other that left 24 people bullet wounded, witnesses said. Rakib and Rana were declared dead after they were taken to a local hospital. Locals whisked the injured off to local hospitals and clinics. Meanwhile, BNP called a daylong hartal in the district for today in protest. Rajshahi: A BNP activist was killed as police opened fire on a procession of the BNP-led alliance in Charghat upazila here, also injuring some 50 people. The victim was identified as Majid Uddin, 45. Witnesses said BNP-Jamaat men brought out a procession in Baneshwar area at 4:00pm, but police obstructed the processionists and opened fire to disperse them, leaving Majid dead on the spot and others injured. Protesting the killing, hartal is also being observed in Rajshahi today. Chapainawabganj: BNP man Jamsed Ali was killed and 14 others were injured as lawmen opened fire on a procession at Kansatbazar in Shibganj upazila here. Police arrested 33 BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists from various places there. In the capital, sporadic clashes took place between police and BNP-Jamaat activists on Kuril Biswa road and its nearby areas around 11:00am. The clash ensued as police barred BNP and Jamaat men from bringing out a procession. During the clash, an ATM booth of BRAC Bank was also vandalised and a vehicle set afire. A service-seeker at the booth was hurt during the violence. The troublemakers hurled several hand-made bombs at police who, however, fired blank shots air to disperse them. Suspected pro-government activists set fire to the BNP office at Bangshal in Dhaka after miscreants exploded bombs in the area. Firemen raced to the spot and took control of the fire. Chhatra Shibir activists attacked a policeman from a rally in Fakirapool area. They also blasted Molotov cocktails and set two motorcycles on fire. However, police opened fire teargas shells and detained six activists. At least five people were wounded, one hit by bullet, as BNP-Jamaat activists were locked in a clash with police in Segunbagicha area at noon. They also torched a motorbike of a police sergeant. Police nabbed two activists during the clash. Lawmen recovered 22 petrol bombs from Swamibagh area under Gandaria in an abandoned state in the morning. Pro-BNP-Jamaat lawyers demonstrated on the High Court premises at noon and also attacked a private car of a justice. A policeman was injured. Meanwhile, commuter sufferings knew no bounds for sporadic clashes here all day long with few vehicles running the roads. Even, no inter-district bus left in the city’s three terminals—Gabtali, Mohakhali and Sayedabad. A strong contingent of lawmen, including police, RAB and detectives, were deployed at different strategic points to maintain law and order. Checkpoints were also set up at all entry and exit points of the city. BGB men were deployed to patrol the capital. Educational institutes and business establishments remained mostly closed while government and non-government offices were open with little activities. Countrywide Violence Brahmanbaria: At least 30 people, including a few journalists, were injured in a triangular clash among AL, BNP and law-enforcers in the district town. Police said BNP-JCD men exploded some 100 crude bombs during the clash. Bandarban: A violent clash ensued between AL and BNP activists in the district town, leaving 20 people injured. Witnesses said both the groups were locked in a clash at noon, leaving at least 20 people wounded. Noakhali: Police foiled a BNP activists’ bid to bring out a procession, defying section 144 in Sonaimuri area. During a drive, police detained 16 BNP activists from various places there. Kushtia: Police held 23 BNP-Jamaat activists from various parts of the district. Chandpur: At least 12 people were injured in a clash between BNP activists and police. Police arrested 21 BNP-Jamaat activists in the district. Magura: Police arrested 11 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat from Sadar, Shalikha, Sreepur and Mohammadpur upazilas of the district. Sunamganj: At least 30 people, including police and a journalist, were injured in a triangular clash among AL, BNP and police in old court area. Later, police brought the situation under control by firing rubber bullet and tear gas shell. Satkhira: Police arrested 50 BNP-Jamaat men from different parts of Satkhira—a stronghold of Jamaat. Cox’s Bazar: Police held 14 leaders and activists of the BNP-led alliance from seven upazilas of the district. Jhenidah: At least 15 people were injured in two separate clashes among AL, BNP and police in Sadar and Shailkupa upazilas. Thirty-eight people, including 23 BNP and two Jamaat men, were arrested from six upazilas of the district. Laxmipur: BNP men brought out a procession in support of their programme, but police foiled it and arrested three activists, including BNP general secretary Prof Nizam Uddin, from the spot. Manikganj: District BNP politicos tried to bring out a sudden procession from the court premises, but police foiled their attempt. Pabna: At least 15 people were injured in a clash between district AL activists and BNP activists. Several vehicles were vandalised. Barisal: Police arrested at least 27 activists of the BNP-led grouping from different upazilas there. Barguna: Police dispersed JCD leaders as they tried to bring out a procession in the town at 11:00am. Bhola: At least 20 people, including three policemen, were injured in a clash in the town at 12 noon. Police detained 17 BNP men during the clash. On the other hand, some agitated BNP men vandalised five to six auto-rickshaw and five shops at Bangla School intersection and fled the scene. Dinajpur: At least five people were injured in a clash between AL activists and BNP activists in the town. Moulvibazar: At least 15 people were injured when BCL torched district BNP office at Borolekha Bazar around 1:00pm. Patuakhali: At least seven people were injured when police tried to resist a procession of district BNP men in Sher-e-Bangla area around 10:00am. Pirojpur: At least nine people were injured in a clash between AL activists and BNP men in Bilash Square area at 12 noon. Sirajganj: At least 10 BNP activists injured, two hit by bullet, in a clash between police and BNP men in the town around 11:00am. The clash ensued when police chased a BNP-led procession. In retaliation, BNP men also chased police and forced the lawmen to fire rubber bullets on them.
