Tk 544cr project okayed:Daily Sun

The government is going to set up an airport at Rampal in Bagerhat at a cost of Tk 544 crore in a bid to boost economic activities as well as tourism industry in Khulna region. The approval for Khan Jahan Ali Airport project came at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. , the government is expecting to send emergency relief during natural disasters to the disaster-prone area through the airport located some 20kms away from both Khulna city and Mongla port.  “A fast communication network will be needed in greater Khulna region as Mongla Port, the EPZ, Shrimp industry and Rampal Power Plant-centric businesses are likely to expand there,” AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters later, highlighting the airport’s importance. Because of the airport’s short distance from Khulna city and Mongla port, there will be further expansion of tourism in the region, centering the world’s largest mangrove forest Sundarbans, Shat Gombuj Masjid (sixty-dome mosque) and the mazar of Khan Jahan Ali, he also hoped. To support the project, he said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also directed for keeping the scope of setting up a three-star hotel there to facilitate holding of international sports and games. The project was first undertaken in 1996 as a short takeoff and landing airport, but it was closed later after acquiring and developing 41.30 hectares of land. The Civil Aviation Authority is expected to implement the project by June 2018. The government would provide Tk 490 crore while the rest of Tk 54 crore will come from the aviation authority. Under the project, there will be land acquisition of 163 hectares, 7,20,173 cubic metres of land development, construction of 2,04,153 square metres of runway and taxiway alongside construction of 18,564 square metres residential buildings. The planning minister said the airport would fulfill the long-cherished demand of the people in Khulna region. A total of 10 development projects were approved in yesterday’s meeting with a total outlay of Tk 1,910.28 crore. Of the total project cost, Tk 1,795.82 crore will come from the national exchequer while the rest of Tk 114.46 crore from implementing organisations’ own fund. The Ecnec meeting gave nod to another project titled ‘Construction and improvement of Roads, Drains and footpaths in Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara diplomatic areas’ with Tk 200 crore to be implemented by the Dhaka North City Corporation under the Local Government Division by June 2017. AHM Mustafa Kamal said the project would be a maiden one for newly-elected Mayor Annisul Huq. He also said the Dhaka South City Corporation would get a new project soon. He also informed that more projects would be undertaken for both the Dhaka and Chittagong city corporations in the coming days in consultation with the respective mayors to address the existing problems. The Ecnec meeting approved anther project titled ‘Construction of six-lane flyover at Mohipal in Feni’ with Tk 158 crore to be implemented by the Roads and Highways Department under the Road Transport and Highways Division by June 2018. The planning minister said the project is expected to minimise traffic congestions on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The other projects approved at the meeting are construction of 478.171 metres of PC Girder Bridge on Chotto Feni River at the 6th km on Sonagazi-Olamabazar-Chardarbeshpur-Companyganj road with Tk 73.30 crore, development of public libraries in six districts with Tk 49.53 crore, renovation, repair and maintenance of 15 District Shilpakala Academies with Tk 40.56 crore. Also, Rural infrastructure development project: Chittagong Hill Tracts 2nd phase with Tk 380 crore, Expansion of Aquaculture Technology Services up to union level (Phase 2) with Tk 242.28 crore, Modernisation of vaccine production technology and extensive of laboratory facilities (MVPT) (2nd revised) with Tk 145.98 crore and Buffalo Development Project (Component A and B) with Tk 75.91 crore got approval. Ministers and state ministers attended the meeting. Planning Commission members and secretaries concerned were present.
