of Shibir and recovered 130 crude bombs in Mohakhali and arrested several Shibir activists in possession of homemade bombs across the country. According to witnesses, Happy Akhter Sumi, 13, student of Azimpur Girls School, and six-year-old Ripon, had their bodies riddled with splinters. They were inside the room when the bomb went off. The right hand of Mahbubur Rahman Bappy, 28, who was allegedly making the bomb, was blown off from the wrist. Deputy Commissioner of Police Mofiz Uddin Ahmed of Lalbagh Division claimed that Bappy was the general secretary of the New Market unit of Chhatra Dal, the pro-BNP student body. A source in Chhatra Dal told The Daily Star that Bappy was a candidate for one of the two top posts in the unit. Sufia Begum, the landlady, whose flat is right across the hall from Bappy's flat, said, "Bappy rented the flat just over a week ago, introducing himself as a student. He also said he had a job in the New Market area." Advertisement The two-room flat was on the first floor of a five-storey building in Dhakeswari Road. Bappy, his sister Jhumur, her husband Abdul Hakim, and their children Sumi and Ripon lived there, Sufia said. Jhumur said, "I was cooking around 3:00pm when I heard the bang from the next room." She saw her children and brother covered in blood. The steel door of the room was mangled by the blast. Police said they found evidence of bomb-making materials at the scene. They detained Jhumur, her husband, the landlady and her son, three others and the three injured. The injured were being treated at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, police busted a bomb-making factory of Islami Chhatra Shibir raiding a building at Mohakhali in the capital early yesterday. The law enforcers arrested five leaders and activists of the pro-Jamaat student organisation and seized 130 crude bombs, two litres of petrol, one kilogramme of gunpowder, and other bomb-making materials from a building in TB Gate area. The arrestees are: Mustafizur Rahman, president of Shibir's Banani unit and his four associates, Jaynal Abedin, Arifuzzaman Arif, Khalid Saifullah and Atiar Rahman. The raid was carried out around 2:30am following a tip off, said Lutful Kabir, deputy commissioner (Gulshan division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. “It was a bomb factory. The Shibir men used to supply bombs across the capital from there,” he said. In Jessore, Shibir Keshabpur upazila unit president Al Amin, 24, was arrested with a petrol bomb and homemade gun-making materials yesterday. Officer-in-Charge of Keshabpur Police Station Abdul Jalil said acting on a tip-off police arrested him at the Ahle Hadit Masjid in the upazila around 2:00pm. Three other Shibir activists escaped arrest during the raid, he added. In Cox's Bazar, police arrested two Shibir activists along with four petrol bombs raiding a home in Burmese School Road area. The arrested are Shibir activists Abdullah and Mohammad Younus, who are students of Cox's Bazar Government College, said Kazi Motiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Cox's Bazar Model Police Station. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday told reporters that they have made a list of anarchists, their financiers, and patrons and have been carrying out drives to arrest them. "We know who are carrying out subversive activities and who are instructing and financing them. We have a list of people protecting them … We will bring them to book," he said.
